Aesthetic. Dysfunctional.

Tattoos are one of the last things that come to mind when thinking about things which age well. Conversely, fine art is one of the first. ‘Skin’, a new documentary by Ryan Hope chronicles these two worlds colliding. In the film, the likes of Damien Hirst, Jeff Coons, and Raymond Pettibon (among others) have original works tattooed on living canvas in an effort to make a statement against the ridiculous levels to which fine art is being commodified today. By using living canvas it becomes impossible for the pieces, which would likely sell for astronomical sums otherwise, to ever be owned by more than one person. A fresh new way of looking at both tattoos and fine art culminating with a great photoshoot by Hedi Slimane. A very well done documentary and an interesting watch.
